Internship: Develop a tool to predict backward compatibility of software interfaces

Job Mission

The software executed on ASML lithography scanners consists of more than 40 million lines of code in packages that interact through interfaces. In order to be able to work on this software with multiple people at the same time, with minimal interference, good interface designs are required. Every time interfaces change, it should be ensured that they are backward compatible. Software integration is done for multiple changes in parallel at source code level. Therefore, only source compatibility and functional compatibility are relevant. Functional compatibility can be judged by observation, but source compatibility should be checked by integrating all parallel developments and then building software.

Job Description

  • Examine source backward compatibility of interface changes using relevant literature
  • Use the eclipse modelling framework (emf) to perform a model based comparison between two versions of an interface description language (IDL). Design an algorithm that determines whether the model differences are source backward compatible.
  • Develop a new tool to predict the source backward compatibility of an interface (based on the observed changes in the interface, specified with the ASML interface specification language).
  • For a Master student: Investigate what functional compatibility can be deduced from the IDL model difference and extend the tool to also report functional compatibility issues (the IDL that ASML uses contains more functional information than a normal C or C++ header file does).

Education

You are a HBO or Master student with a background in Software engineering, Computer Science or related. This is a graduation assignment with a duration of 6 months, starting as soon as possible.

You must know how to use a Linux terminal, and Windows. You preferably also have (some) experience with the Eclipse modelling framework (emf), C, C++ and python.
You have good analytical skills and are driven to produce a new tool to the highest quality standards.

Please keep in mind that we can only consider students (who are enrolled at a school during the whole internship period) for our internships and graduation assignments.
