ASML is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of chip-making equipment. Headquartered in Veldhoven, the Netherlands, ASML employs more than 21,000 people.
We have over 60 sales and service offices worldwide and a global warehouse in Korea. Then there are our 3 manufacturing facilities in Taiwan, the USA and the Netherlands. These three sites are supplied by a network of over 600 suppliers spread across the planet. So you can just imagine the challenges involved in getting the right materials to the right locations at the right time. If one link in that network doesn't function properly, we can't ship an end product on time.
ASML is at the cutting edge of technology and we manufacture in very low volumes, so there is a limited choice of suitable suppliers. Combined with our strategy to outsource manufacturing activities and our goal to integrate suppliers as much as possible, this creates quite a logistics challenge. What's more, the fast technology pace of the semiconductor industry and the relatively long lead times for lithography systems means there can be a lot of engineering changes over the manufacturing lifetime of a system type. Two systems of exactly the same type could have very different bills of materials (BoMs). The dynamic marketplace also means volumes can change greatly in a matter of weeks. So building flexibility into the total supply chain is crucial.
In general, ASML is a very open and flexible place to work. Keep your eyes and ears open, and you can learn a lot from other people and gain valuable experience in your field of interest. At the same time, your colleagues are willing to learn from you. This sharing of knowledge and experience is a big part of working at ASML.
