Graduation assignment : Investigate Human Safety functions in a FPGA based solution

Are you a Master student in Electronics Engineering with a good understanding of FPGA design? Are you interested in working in the industry? Then this graduation project could be interesting for you.
The machines ASML builds require complex integrated logic functions to ensure Human Safety in many different machine operating states. Human Safety functions are currently implemented in dedicated safety PLC’s, whereas typical solutions for machine control at ASML are implemented in FPGA’s. ASML is exploring the possibility of deploying human safety functions on FPGA-based solutions, as this will enable integration of Human Safety functions and regular machine control. This in turn will greatly simplify design, deployment and maintenance of machine control, saving design cost and increasing machine uptime adding value to ASML’s products. Reliability and predictability of Human Safety solutions is of prime concern.
The goal of this assignment is to investigate the technical possibilities of an FPGA-based Human Safety function and to develop an FPGA based Human-Safety-function architecture. You will:
• Investigate the available FPGA components and tools in the market that are certified for human safety functions;
• Investigate standards regarding human safety design requirements that apply to ASML machines;
• Explore different design architectures that fulfil the applicable human safety requirements;
• Propose a design architecture that will lead to a generic solution for an FPGA based human safety function.
You are a Master student with a background in Electronic engineering and have knowledge of developing FPGA code.
Experience with SoC FPGA’s and (basic) Linux knowledge is a nice to have. You preferably have (some) experience with programming an embedded system (e.g. Arduino, Raspberry Pi) inC/C++. Additionally, you have good communication skills and a proactive attitude in order to find relevant information from different departments within this organization is required.
This is a Master graduation assignment with a duration of minimum 4 months, for 4 or 5 days a week. The start date is in September 2020.
