Job Mission

Optimal fabrication of nanometer-sized semiconductor devices requires regular inspection and feedback. A major part of this feedback is based on analysis of images taken with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). There are various ways employed to assess pattern fidelity by extracting the dimensions of nanometer-sized features from these SEM images, including machine learning. The driving question behind this internship is: What can machine learning bring us compared to other techniques?

Job Description

We believe that machine learning is likely to have an important role in future SEM image analysis. Your assignment will be to help assess if this believe is well-founded. More specifically, we expect you to:
•Choose a suitable machine learning based approach for feature edge extraction from SEM images;
•Show with what accuracy and speed this approach can operate and assess how it relates to other used techniques.


You are a Bachelor or Master student with significant machine learning experience and affinity. Familiarity with Neural Network is critical for this assignment. You should be well versed in Python, and be interested to learn how SEM images are used in the semiconductor industry. Experience in Image processing is welcome but not a necessity.
We are looking for someone who is naturally curious, self-motivated and good at working independently. You should be comfortable presenting progress on your work on a weekly basis and actively participate in group meeting discussions. Furthermore, your communication skills in English should be excellent.

This is an apprentice internship for 4-5 days a week with a duration of a minimum 3 months. The start date of this internship is as soon as possible.

Please note that we can only consider students who are enrolled at a school for the entire duration of the internship.
