Background Information

ASML brings together the most creative minds in science and technology to develop lithography machines that are key to producing faster, cheaper, more energy-efficient microchips. We design, develop, integrate, market and service these advanced machines, which enable our customers - the world’s leading chipmakers - to reduce the size and increase the functionality of their microchips, which in turn leads to smaller, more powerful consumer electronics.

At ASML-Research, we have recently found a novel method to reduce the oxidation level of the metal surface. Diminution of the oxidation level is tailored by a chemical treatment process. These investigations are mostly done by a combination of modeling and experiments within the project. We plan to provide the mechanistic understanding of how this chemical treatment prevents the surface from oxidation. Further research via computational methods is needed to elucidate this finding at the atomic scale and devise possible strategies to optimize the chemical treatment from the gained understanding.

Your Assignment

This proposal intends to investigate the adsorption kinetics of atomic and molecular oxygen on well-defined model systems that are of relevance in the aforementioned context. Standard density functional theory (DFT) calculations will be carried out based on the generalized-gradient approximation (GGA) for the exchange-correlation functional in a plane-wave implementation to obtain the adsorption energy profile for different adsorption sites. Appropriate transition state analysis techniques (e.g. nudge elastic band) will be used for the calculation of energy barriers. Despite the GGA-inherent error the calculated energy barriers will allow to estimate oxygen adsorption rates for the model systems considered here and can thus provide valuable mechanistic insights into the diminution of oxidation due to the chemical treatment at the atomic scale. The work is going to be carried out in collaboration with the Theoretical Chemistry group of Leiden University.

Goal:
Modeling of adsorption as dissociation of O species on chemically treated metal surfaces to understand the impact of pre-adsorbed species on oxide chemistry.

Milestones:
-month 1: Definition of plan for the computational simulations, this depends on the hiring process.
-month 5: Comparison with our experimental data. Conclusion on reliability and error of the modelling approach and how to improve it.
-month 9: Finished report and given final presentation.

Your Profile

  • You are a master student with educational background in Physics or Material science
  • You have experience in programming (python, c).
  • You are flexible to travel to Leiden.

You are available for minimum 9monhts, for 5 days per week
