Laser Research engineer - Advanced light sources

Research & development

In a nutshell

Dresden, Germany

3-7 years

Job Category

Light sources are critical to ASML’s mission. We are looking for a physicist who can help us further improve the performance of a novel type of ultra-bright, fiber-based light source for our metrology systems and scanners.

Job Mission

Improve the performance for broadband, fiber-based light sources.

Job Description

- Help us further understand and expand the performance of our light sources: You will investigate, both in experiment and theory, fundamental performance drivers such as brightness, stability, lifetime or root causes of failure mechanisms
- We are looking for an ‘all-rounder’: Most of what we do requires a mix of optics, electronics, mechanics and software. You should be excellent in at least one of these and be comfortable with the others.
- Work in optical laboratories
- Work with specialty diagnostics tools e.g. SEM and microscope, pulse characterization tools
- Collaborate with academic partners and suppliers

- M.Sc. or Ph.D. in physics and/or optics

- 3-5 years of relevant experience in a research or development environment (Ph.D. is acknowledged)
- Strong background in lasers, general and fiber optics
- Demonstrable, practical experience in the following fields would be a big plus:
Ultrafast Lasers
Nonlinear and fiber optics
Laser system design
Coding (e.g. Matlab, LabView, Python)
Optical simulation tools

Personal skills

- You are motivated to find solutions to hard scientific and engineering challenges
- You are hypothesis-driven, systematic and thorough in your approach, but also understand that getting to an 80% answer in 20% of the time is often what moves things forward
- You will be part of a (small) team. You need to be able to structure and execute your own project and make sure it interfaces with a bigger picture.

Context of the position

You report to a group leader. The principal location of work is in Erlangen, Germany.
Occasional business trips to ASML’s Headquarters at in The Netherlands may be required.
