Introduction

Background information

The group Sensors Mechanics is part of the cluster Mechanical Development and is responsible for the design of optical sensor systems, like interferometers and image sensors. A main requirement of these sensors is that they show an excellent thermal and dynamic behavior and have a very high stability performance. All sensors operate in an ultraclean environment and sometimes under vacuum conditions. In order to achieve this set of performances, also the intended manufacturing methods for specific parts are taken into account during the design process. Although Additive Manufacturing (AM) methods are getting more and more common practice for the industry, the incorporation of this manufacturing method is not yet in our standard design toolbox for several reasons.

Your assignment

Your task will be to select, together with some ASML engineers, one or more parts from our currently produced sensors. These potentially will qualify to be manufactured using an Additive Manufacturing technology and which can benefit from it. Based on this selection and the known risks and characteristics of specific AM technologies, you make a first iteration redesign and have it manufactured as a demonstrator. The aim of this internship is to demonstrate to designers the potential advantages of AM for sensor parts.

As a result you will be required to:

  • Make a small selection of potential sensor parts;
  • Set up an assessment to determine the pros and cons of using AM technology for the selected;
  • Select a part based on the conducted assessment for redesign in NX, so that maximum benefit will be gained by using the AM technology;
  • Have the redesign reviewed and manufactured and if possible qualified according to specifications;
  • Review the manufactured part and define a set of conclusions and recommendations.

Your profile

  • You are a bachelor or master student with a background in Mechanical Engineering;
  • You are a bachelor student looking to do your graduation project or a master student interested in gaining work experience;
  • You are a communicative student and have solution-oriented approach;
  • You have genuine interest in AM technologies;
  • Basic experience with AM technologies ( metal and plastics) is highly preferred;
  • You are available to do a full-time internship with a duration of 5-9 months.

Please note that we can only consider students who are enrolled at a school for the entire duration of the internship.
