ASML’s EUV D&E group in San Diego is responsible for the design, engineering, development, and integration of complex high vacuum, high pressure, variable temperature, inert gas & molten tin flow systems along with the required tooling and packaging for ASML’s EUV light source. The complexity of the EUV light source places exacting requirements on Mechanical Design of vacuum vessels, inert gas flow in vacuum, liquid tin delivery under high pressure, material design compatibility with refractory metals and glass, cleanliness & particle containment, and high temperature and pressure piping and sealing of inert gases and water.

ASML works within a gated Program Generation Process (PGP) combining rapid concurrent development timelines with precision engineering and design to the highest reliability standards. Each component and sub-system requires unique and creative solutions drawing from the following engineering fundamentals:precision mechanical design, material science, design for vacuum and high pressure, heat transfer, fluid mechanics, vibrations, 3D volume packaging and interface design, FEA/CFD analysis.

All design activities are expected to lead to high quality CAD models, drawings, design specifications documentation, DFMEA, proto test planning and design validation reporting, properly configured BoM release, supply chain validation and documentation, production process and procedures, and high-volume logistics strategy all managed in an NX, Teamcenter, SAP environment. ASML uses Change Management 2 (CM2) release and change process.

The Principal Design Engineer will monitor the integrity of the system architecture towards product roadmap realization. Specify, design, develop, industrialize, integrate, and test (sub-)modules and the tools required to build, qualify, and service the product, in cooperation with other disciplines and suppliers, and within the limits of the product requirements, detailed design specifications, costs, and project planning to ensure the timely realization of components and (sub-) modules leading to competitive products that can be procured, built, qualified, transported, installed, serviced, and re-used.

Role and responsibilities

  • Direct and guide the activities of a team of mechanical engineers in the design of components, modules, and subsystems from concept through manufacturing transfer and high-volume ramp.
  • Assist in developing and enforce department engineering practices and design rules, consistent with corporate objectives.
  • Builds and Maintains long term design knowledge growth, documentation, training and global transfer via continued development of the ASML Technical Competencies. For example:
    • Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)

  • Motivates and organizes the team towards effective and efficient delivery of quality designs on time.Oversees, performs, and approves high quality standards in GD&T, Tolerance Stacks, Volumes/Interfaces, DFMEA/PFMEA execution, Validation Testing & Reporting, and overall Design for the Six Fundamentals as follows:
    • Product Performance (includes Safety and Legal Compliance)
    • Lifetime (Reliability at start-up, and Durability for life)
    • Manufacturing (Yield, Cycle Time, Throughput)

  • Develops resolutions to critical new product issues and field escalations using ASML 8D process.
  • Directs Failure Analysis activities using 5-Why, Fishbone, Field Data, and industry-leading Tear-Down and Inspection techniques towards reliable root cause determination and permanent containment.
  • Works cohesively with teams ranging in size from 10-30 in delivering to the gated PGP Masterplan including key deliverables, timeline, budget.
  • Demonstrates proactive management of commitments and expectations with stakeholders.
  • Is able to divide complex tasks into individual activities and monitors progress towards first-time-right designs.
  • Oversees/Delivers/Approves prototype and pilot detailed design, including creation and review of required technical documentation including Design Specifications, Engineering Changes (EC’s), Drawings, Analysis Results, and Bills-Of-Materials (BoM), and Assembly Procedures.
  • Supports development activities following ASML’s D&E Handbook including architecture reviews, design reviews, risk mitigation, proto builds, pilot builds, verification testing, etc., with records and completion of all open action items and test reports.
  • Responsible for the research and selection of new suppliers with potential for turn-key provision of key subsystems, and contributes to make/buy decision process.Responsible for providing technical expertise in the core technology area of the potential suppliers to reveal best design path and performance and cost from future subsystem purchases.
  • Interacts closely with development engineers, R&D scientists, Systems Engineering, Procurement, Supplier Quality Engineering, Customer Service, Manufacturing, Logistics, Safety, and QA to resolve quality issues.

LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Mentors and motivates a project team of design engineers, architects, analysts, and technicians helping to guide them on day-day tasks towards high quality products.
  • Can present results to a broad range of stakeholders from CTO to supplier.
    Is comfortable pivoting attention towards areas of highest concern as projects evolve and new issues arise.
  • Works with Project Leads, Engineering Group Leads, and Managers to ensure timely delivery of project deliverables. Job requires resource negotiating skills and an instinct for prioritizing.
  • Identify, invent, and procure improved design and analysis tools and services (1D Execl/Matlab Tools, FEA, CFD, Knowledge Retention etc).
  • Act as a representative in cross-functional meetings to maintain coordination between the Mechanical Engineering and other functional organizations (Manufacturing, Test, and Procurement) in handoff of product from engineering to production.
  • Interpret, implement and monitor modifications to department methods, processes, and policies that affect multiple work groups.
  • Establishes him/her self as the natural “go-to” for their discipline and product by being proactive and highly visible.

Education and experience

Strong competence with the various tools, procedures, programming languages used to accomplish the job.

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and a minimum of twelve (12) years of relevant experience.May consider a Master’s degree with a minimum of ten (10) years of experience.
  • Experience in designing, fabrication, testing and release of mechanical, electro-mechanical modules, and related system interfaces for capital equipment tools.
  • Previous experience with a large OEM machinery manufacturing industry desired. Semiconductor machinery preferred. Automotive and Aerospace also attractive.
  • Previous experience with vacuum, flow, thermal systems, material science, high pressure components, vibrations, sealing, and bolted joint design strongly desired.
  • Experience with a product design/change process and required documentation for high-volume-manufacturing.
