Introduction to the job

ASML US, LP brings together the most creative minds in science and technology to develop lithography machines that are key to producing faster, cheaper, more energy-efficient microchips. We design, develop, integrate, market and service these advanced machines, which enable our customers - the world’s leading chipmakers - to reduce the size and increase the functionality of their microchips, which in turn leads to smaller, more powerful consumer electronics. Our headquarters are in Veldhoven, the Netherlands, and we have 18 office locations around the United States including main offices in Wilton, CT, Chandler, AZ, San Jose, CA and San Diego, CA.

This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require ASM0L to proceed with applicants who are immediately eligible to access controlled technology.”

We are looking for a driven, hands-on and experienced Principal Mechanical Engineer with a strong and diverse background in mechanical design to join our extreme ultraviolet (EUV) Source Research and Development team. This position will be a key contributor in designing mechanical modules, parts and assemblies involving high pressure gas and liquid systems, as well as providing architecture configuration for our EUV light sources.

Leads the development of the Mechanical Design within the EUV droplet generator team within the Source Research and Development team. to enable the existing and future functions according to the program roadmap. Assigned sub-system design project through direct technical advice, schematics/design, approvals, and collaboration with Development Engineering team and external suppliers.

A key ingredient in the EUV generation process is a stable source of molten tin droplets. These droplets provide the fuel for the laser-produced plasma and serve as the heart-beat for synchronizing the EUV source. The challenge is to reliably produce nearly perfect droplets of molten tin tens of thousands of times each second at a speed of 10’s of m/s with position stability that’s a fraction of a droplet diameter. If these dimensions were scaled up to the game of golf, this would be equivalent to scoring a hole-in-one in a hole that’s 25 km away in swirling gas flows and a plasma that’s hotter than the surface of the sun, 10’s of thousands of times per second. The successful candidate will be comfortable designing mechanical modules to operate in this diverse mix of physics, engineering and materials science. The successful candidate will also have a passion for innovation, be driven by curiosity, and have deep technical understanding, in order to excel in a Research environment operating at the fuzzy front end of product development. A key part of our success is the ability to quickly translate ideas for functional hardware, metrology, and test apparatus, into hardware for testing. The successful candidate will use their skills in analysis and design and collaboration to work with scientists and engineers to rapidly convert ideas into breadboard hardware for Research product development.

Role and responsibilities

  • Contributes as Principal Mechanical Engineer in a research environment; engages scientists and engineers in early-phase product development with a focus on designing and building breadboard hardware; maximizes rate of learning via rapid prototyping and testing of component level and breadboard-module-level hardware.
  • Contributes as Mechanical domain expert to apply a broad range of fundamental mechanical engineering knowledge including but not limited to high pressure (kbar) gas and liquid system design and manufacturing techniques.
  • Works closely with cross-functional groups to understand the current product issues, develop integrated solutions and develop next generation systems. Engages engineers, scientists, manufacturing, and upper management to gain alignment and drive the implementation of the Droplet Generator function.
  • Capable of pulling requirements from multiple functions and multiple disciplines to understand and balance their impacts on design constraints.
  • Assists in providing a broad mechanical engineering design background and performs mechanical engineering analysis (stress, fluids, vibrations, thermal), design for control and distribution of inert and hazardous gases, air and water handling for thermal management of equipment and enclosures, large enclosure design, electrical component packaging, mechanical structural mounts and fixtures, design for manufacturability in low volume products, and design for configuration management.
  • Assists in generating module or system concepts to meet product requirements.
