Are you a master student in physics, mathematics, or similar, looking for a graduation project? Are you driven to understand physics and have already acquired some skills in programming? If so, this internship might be interesting for you!

Background information

ASML builds not only lithography machines, but also metrology equipment, used for quality control during the production of integrated circuits. These circuits are built up from layers, each layer with different materials and patterns. With metrology, it is verified that the patterns are aligned correctly (‘overlay’) and have the correct dimensions and shapes.

At the Research department, we are working on a revolutionary new technology for metrology. There are many approaches to translate the raw data from this technology into suitable metrics. One of these is coherent diffraction imaging: estimating the 3D structure of a microcircuit from a diffraction pattern.

Your assignment

Your goal is to find out how much prior knowledge of the 3D structure is needed in order to reconstruct the structure from a measured diffraction pattern. You will:

  • Start from an algorithm that works for an ideal case (high-resolution input data, high prior knowledge);
  • Evaluate the performance when the case is less and less ideal;
  • Implement and evaluate methods to deal with low prior knowledge;
  • Explain why some methods work better than others.

This internship is intended as a master graduation project, starting as soon as a matching candidate is found, 4 to 5 days per week, for a duration of 9 to 12 months. The internship is conducted as a hybrid, working both remotely and on-site.

Your profile

To be the perfect match for this internship you:

  • Are a master student in physics, mathematics, or similar, looking for a graduation project;
  • Have programming skills (e.g. Python/numpy) and an affinity with computational methods;
  • Strive to understand Physics and have an eagerness to learn;
  • Speak and write English on an advanced level.

Please note that we may only consider students who remain enrolled at their university for the whole duration of the internship.
