Introduction to the job

To strengthen the materials science competence, ASML Research is looking for an inorganic/hybrid materials scientist who can add value to the understanding and development ofinorganic/hybrid materials.

Role and responsibilities

ASML is seeking a Materials scientist with expertise in design of inorganic materials to produce ultra-high precision systems. In this role you will focus on the design of materials based on mechanical, thermal and chemical properties and advise on manufacturability of the proposed materials.

The main focus of this position will be:

  • Understand the electron and ioninteractions with thin film materials.
  • Experience with synthesizingultra-thin films and characterizing them.
  • Investigate materials andchemical issues in extreme conditions.
  • Solve any engineeringchallenges that we encounter related to material aspects of design andmanufacturing process ofmaterialsto achieve the precision and life time performance.
  • Use modeling techniques to explainobserved phenomena.
  • Document and present the data.

Education and experience

PhD degree in Physics and Materials science


  • PhD in Physics or Materialsscience with background and experience in electron and ion interactionwith materials with a focus on thin films.
  • A minimum of 7-9 years ofindustry experience.
  • Experience in correlating thenanoscopic characterization to microscopic properties.
  • Experience with materialsmodeling techniques.
  • Excellent Knowledge ofelectro-optical, mechanical and interfacial properties of materials.
  • Expert knowledge of MATLAB.
  • Excellent analytical andexperimental skills.

Other information

The Research Materials Science andChemistry group is part of the Research department of ASML. This group identifies and fills in technological gaps in the future roadmap of lithography and the lithography market. Our focus is on advanced material research and on the interaction of light (13.5 nm) with the gaseous background in our tools and on solid materials. We work in small teams and deliver solutions that can be transferred to Development and Engineering. We work together with external research institutes and universities.

This position may require access to controlled technology, as defined in the Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. §730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require ASML to proceed with candidates who are immediately eligible to access controlled technology.
