Introduction

Are you a bachelor or master student in mechanical engineering? Are you interested in temperature dependent strength and stiffness calculations? Do you have an affinity on how to test the critical parameters in their design to validate performance? If so, this internship could be interesting for you!

Background information

The recent electronics shortage gave a strong push towards higher output of lithography systems. To enable higher throughput, higher EUV source powers are required. One bottleneck for higher source power is the feed pressure of the liquid tin supply.
The liquid tin is used to create a constant stream of droplets to be hit by a high power laser, which creates a hot plasma that radiates the EUV light. Higher pressure gives more droplets, which gives more EUV light.
The current system is pressurized by means of gas. There are several technical limits to this system which will be reached in the coming years. To enable higher pressures (>2000 bar) a new pressurization method is envisioned using the expansion of the tin solid-liquid phase change. By melting a fluid in a confined space tremendous pressures can be reached. This internship focusses on finding a way to harness this pressure in a practical way.

Your assignment

With the aid of experienced designers you will:

  • Define a test setup to validate the concept of a phase-change powered tin pump. You need to prove by analysis that the setup can withstand both the temperatures (250 C) and pressures (>2000 bar);
  • Design a high pressure pump;
  • Prove that the design can withstand the desired pressures;
  • Come up with a validation test plan;
  • Oversee the integration of the design in a test setup;
  • Test and validate your design.

You’ll be working in close collaboration with experienced architect(s) and experts to develop enabling technology for the next generation lithography tools.

Your profile

To be the perfect match for this internship, you:

  • are a bachelor, HBO student looking to do your graduation project or a master student looking to gain work experience;
  • have a background in Mechanical Engineering;
  • have experience in designing, material knowledge;
  • have an affinity with how manufacturing works;
  • have a practical approach and is capable of dealing with changing requirements and new insights in the design;
  • like to work in a multidisciplinary team;
  • speak and write English proficiently.

The preferred start date is as soon as possible, with a minimum duration of 6 months.

Please note that we may only consider students who remain enrolled at their educational facility for the entire duration of the internship.
