Introduction

Do you have a background in Electrical Engineering? Are you able to work with standardized PLC software? Do you thrive in dynamic environments? Then this internship could be interesting for you!

Background information

Automation is becoming ever important in most industries and sectors. Efficient automation involves a high degree of modularity and scalability in the design of PLC software, leading to lower future development and maintenance costs. The end goal of this internship is to increase the efficiency in automating PLC software by auto-generating PLC code using a set of predefined parameters. The IEC 61131-3 establishes a universal XML-based structure which adheres to the so-called PLCopen standard, aiming to make PLC code independent from manufacturers.

However, one bottleneck that needs to be addressed and the first stage is the investigation and know-how of the aforementioned norm in order to proceed with the development and test of a proof-of-concept software package with the ability to translate sets of parameters from a database into parts of an ST (Structured Text) PLC program.

Your assignment

With the aid of experienced designers and possibly with other interns of electrical and other engineering disciplines, you will work on a test methodology to validate the potential and best-case solution for auto-generating ST PLC code (work on PLC software &programming languages, testing and interpretation of the norm IEC 61131-3).

You will be involved in the design of the described tool from beginning to end, participating both in the early design of new software through final tests and qualification.

The tasks and responsibilities will be aligned to meet the educational objective of the institution and competence of the student.
You’ll be working in close collaboration with experienced architect(s) and experts to develop enabling technology for next generation lithography tools.

Your profile

To be the perfect match for this internship you:

  • Have an educational background in electrical engineering;
  • Are able to work with standardized PLC software;
  • Have programming skills in Python and/or Visual Basic;
  • Are structured with an eye for detail and have a strong pragmatic attitude;
  • Are able to work both independently as well as in a team in a dynamic environment
  • Have good communication skills in English, both in speech and in writing.

This is a bachelor or master internship lasting 6 months, 5 days per week starting in August 2023.
