Job Mission

The Principal Software Engineer will be responsible for significant projects that may involve developing new architectures or modify existing architectures.The Principal Software Engineer will be responsible for collecting and documenting software requirements, developing a solution to those requirements, communicating the solution to other team members and other functional organizations in order to gain alignment, developing a detail project plan, and then leading the implementation of that solution.The Principal Software Engineer will contribute to continuing efforts to the refine department best practices for software design and implementation and will identify new tools and techniques that improve quality and efficiency.

You would work with Systems and Algorithms engineers to collect and refine requirements for the project you are working on.Using those requirements, you will formulate designs for integrating your software into the current system, implement those designs, and then unit test them.You would then work with our SQA team to verify those implementations so they can be released to the field.Our project teams are small, so your visibility and impact will be high.

Job Description

  • Design software responses to system and controls requirements. Author software requirements, architecture, design and test specification documents.

  • Articulate (verbal and written) the design decisions and implementations through formal presentations to other groups and management.

  • Lead complex SW projects; define and track a project schedule, allocate tasks to other team members and track progress, assist other team members with resolving difficult or complex technical issues, implement technically challenges portions of the software.

  • Identify and evaluate new SW technologies and techniques, and develops proposals for their introduction.

  • Conform to the approved Software Development Process and the Program Development Process, and be an active champion of process improvement.

  • Participate in the screening and selection of software development team members and in the mentoring of new software development team members.

  • Mentor junior and external (contractor) software development team members.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Requires Minimum of BS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or other related Eng/Science fields.MS or Ph.D. in relevant field is a plus


  • 10+ years of experience in the development of control systems software with complex hardware interfaces and various communication protocols

  • Ability to quickly develop and understand complex control systems including embedded real-time, application layers, CORBA interface and its associated hardware environment.

  • Ability to independently determine technical solutions.

  • Completion, in the role of software architect, of a least one real-time project from concept thru customer delivery.

  • Strong C++ knowledge, Object Oriented Design principles and embedded development.

  • Experience using an RTOS: VxWorks,Integrity or other RTOS.

  • Knowledge of software engineering processes, including Software configuration management and the ability to read and create appropriate project documentation.

  • Knowledge of real time operating systems, control system theory, embedded software design, real time system interactions in an embedded environment.

  • Knowledge of microcontroller architectures and principles of operation.

  • Knowledge and ability to work with oscilloscopes, and signal generators.

  • In depth knowledge of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Familiarity with MS Project preferred.

  • Ability to translate, statistically analyze data, and effectively report problems through written and/or graphical formats.
  • Ability to multi-task and set priorities without jeopardizing project schedule.

  • Data driven decision maker, good negotiation skills, positive attitude.
