Application and Business Support Engineer - Customer Support

Working at ASML is exciting. Being involved in productivity optimization for our Korean customers within the Customer Support Department, you never know where the next challenge is going to come from and everyday brings its surprises. We’re always pushing frontiers forward, making machines faster and helping our customers to be more competitive. That could mean reviewing a complete litho cell operation one day and trying to find out why a process is ‘losing’ half a second the next.

You need a technical background to understand customer issues, working with them to know how their process and recipes work on our machines. That way we can help them tweak the settings to get the best out of the machine. Alternatively we can go back to the development and marketing teams and see if we can create new options that will ensure our customers get the highest productivity possible. As the systems at ASML get more and more complex, the technology becomes more intertwined, so sometimes you have to really consider many things to make major improvements. I’m learning every day and my current challenge is to see how far we can push the productivity on the Twinscan 1900Gi.

I studied engineering and microelectronics at the National Institute or Applied Science (INSA) in Rennes, France. High tech challenges have always attracted me but I also want to see the world, as I love to travel. So for my first job after university I thought “let’s go to ASML in The Netherlands”. As for my job, application and business support engineer seemed to offer the best opportunity to achieve both my initial career goals.

Sometimes I miss dealing with the ‘hard’ physics, but dealing with customers is interesting and fun. In university you can learn about technology and how to use different techniques to solve a problem, but it doesn’t teach you how to deal with customers. I also interact with various ASML experts with different backgrounds, from development engineers to marketing. But normally you’ll find me on the phone with engineers in Korea. And one day soon I hope to visit them on-site.

At ASML there is a global culture with Dutch roots. It’s very open minded and interactive, and it's a joy to work with experts coming from all over the world. From the beginning, I didn’t feel like a foreigner for long.
