Introduction

The MX (Metrology and Machine Control) cluster provides the supervisory control, modelling and optimization algorithms to the Twinscan range of platforms.

Your assignment

Currently, when we apply software patches to a Twinscan platform, we stop the bulk of the software processes (drivers) before patching the files, then bring them back up after the patching is complete. This ensures that those drivers connected directly to the hardware are in a safe state at all times. However this has the disadvantage that it takes quite some time to execute this, as some of these drivers have fairly complex initialization sequences.

In the case of the MX cluster, the software is not directly coupled to the real-time hardware, so it would be possible to stop and patch these without stopping the hardware , and this has been shown for some small use cases to be possible. In this internship, supported by senior architects / developers, the intern would develop a robust mechanism and tooling to perform such updates across the MX cluster (which can involve restarting many tens of interconnected processes, accounting for variation by platform).
