Introduction

This internship focuses on designing a custom development board based on a European open-source FPGA. The board will be tailored to the company’s frequently used components and interfaces, enabling faster prototyping and testing. The student will be involved in the full hardware design cycle—from schematic capture to PCB layout and prototype validation.

Your assignment

In this internship, you will:

  • Define requirements for the devkit based on internal use cases.
  • Select components (e.g., memory, power management, connectors, sensors) commonly used in company projects.
  • Design schematics and PCB layout using industry-standard tools (e.g., KiCad).
  • Collaborate with firmware engineers to ensure compatibility and usability.
  • Order and assemble prototype boards.
  • Perform bring-up and validation of the devkit.
  • Create documentation and usage guidelines for internal teams.

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn the process of designing custom FPGA-based hardware.
  • Understand component selection and integration for embedded systems.
  • Gain experience with PCB design tools and hardware validation.
  • Contribute to the company’s internal hardware development infrastructure.

This is a bachelor/master internship or graduation (thesis) project for 3-5 days a week, with a duration of 3-6 months. The start date of this internship is as soon as possible.

Your profile

To be a fit for this internship, you preferably:

  • Have experience with schematic capture and PCB layout tools (e.g., KiCad).
  • Have an understanding of embedded components like memory, power ICs, and connectors.
  • Demonstrate skills in prototype bring-up, testing, and debugging.
  • Have the ability to work with firmware engineers to ensure hardware compatibility.

Other requirements you need to meet

  • You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship;
  • You need to be located in the Netherlands to be perform your internship. In case you ‘re currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, your CV/motivation letter includes the willingness to relocate.
  • If you are a non-EU citizen, studying in the Netherlands, your university is willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement).
