Introduction

You will join a team focused on FPGA-based system design and communication architectures within ASML in Veldhoven. The team works on developing efficient, scalable, and cost-effective solutions for data transfer in embedded systems. This internship focuses on exploring lightweight communication link standards suitable for low-cost and low-power FPGA applications. Your work will contribute to identifying and prototyping efficient communication solutions that can be reused across multiple systems, supporting future designs with improved performance and reduced resource usage.

Your assignment

In this internship, you will develop a proof-of-concept solution for remotely managing FPGA firmware within a running system via Ethernet. The focus is on enabling secure and reliable in-system updates while maintaining system availability. You will explore how network-based configuration can improve flexibility and reduce maintenance effort in embedded environments. Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Design a concept for remote FPGA firmware updates over Ethernet

  • Develop a proof-of-concept implementation using a lightweight file transfer protocol

  • Configure and test in-system programming within a running hardware setup

  • Validate the reliability and stability of firmware updates

  • Analyze and document security considerations for remote updates

  • Evaluate performance, including update speed and system impact

  • Present findings and recommendations for further development

This is a masters non thesis/thesis internship for 6 months, for 5 days per week (3 days on-site). The start date of this internship is as of September 2026.

Your profile

To be suitable for the internship, you:

  • Are pursuing a masters degree in electrical engineering, embedded systems, computer engineering, or software engineering

  • Have knowledge of VHDL, FPGA, and high-speed electronics needed

  • Have experience with programming in C, C++, or a similar language

  • Show analytical thinking and a structured way of working

  • Communicate clearly and collaborate effectively in a team

This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the United States Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require ASML to proceed with candidates who are immediately eligible to access controlled technology.
